Black and white SVG

A black and white SVG is one colour of shape on nothing, which is exactly what cutters, lasers, stamps and vinyl need. This page converts any PNG or JPG into one. You choose the cut-off between black and white, and we clean up the stray dots.

How to do it

  1. Drop a PNG or JPG above. Clear, high contrast images give the cleanest result.
  2. Set Mode to Cricut cut-ready (one colour).
  3. Move Threshold left or right until the preview matches the black you want.
  4. Pick Dark areas to keep the dark parts, or Light areas to keep the light parts.
  5. Download the SVG. The shapes are black on a transparent background.

Swap black and white

If your picture is white on black, choose Light areas so the white part becomes the shape.

No grey

The output has no grey tones. Shading will turn into either black or nothing, so add contrast first if you want detail.

Recolour later

The shape is a path, so you can fill it with any colour in a design program or tell your cutter which vinyl to use.

Questions

Can I make a black and white SVG from a colour image?

Yes. The threshold decides which colours count as dark and which count as light.

Will it keep greys?

No. This mode gives pure black shapes. Use Colour mode with two or three colours for a tonal look.

Is my image uploaded?

No. The tracing runs in your browser tab, so the image stays on your device.

What does it cost?

Three downloads a day are free. Unlimited is $7.99 a month, or a 20-image pack is $6.99 once.
