Trace image to SVG

Tracing means drawing shapes over the edges of a picture so you end up with paths. Illustrator, Inkscape and Fusion all do it, but they need installing and a learning curve. This page traces an image in your browser in a few seconds and shows the result next to the original.

How to do it

  1. Drop a PNG or JPG above. Dark shapes on a plain background are the easy case.
  2. Pick Cricut cut-ready (one colour) for a silhouette, or Colour for several flat colours.
  3. Move Threshold while you watch the preview. Stop when the edge sits where you want it.
  4. Use Remove specks to delete small stray shapes and Smoothing to round jagged edges.
  5. Download the SVG for your CAD, cutter or design program.

For CAD work

A one colour SVG can be imported as a sketch in Fusion, Shapr3D or Tinkercad and extruded. Keep it to a single closed outline when you can.

Trace at the right contrast

If the preview loses detail, raise the contrast of the source image first. That helps more than any slider.

Open paths

Tracing makes closed shapes. If you need a single centre line for a pen plotter, that is a different kind of trace.

Questions

How is this different from Image Trace in Illustrator?

It does the same kind of job in a browser tab. You do not need the software, but you get fewer controls.

Can it trace a hand drawing?

Yes. Scan or photograph it flat in good light, then trace in single colour mode.

Is my image uploaded?

No. The tracing runs in your browser tab, so the image stays on your device.

What does it cost?

Three downloads a day are free. Unlimited is $7.99 a month, or a 20-image pack is $6.99 once.
