TracecutConverter

Photo to line art SVG

A photo has no lines, so a converter has to decide where the edges are. We threshold the picture into dark and light, remove the specks and trace the dark areas. The result looks like a stencil or a linocut. It suits cutting, engraving, stickers and tattoo-style prints.

How to do it

  1. Choose a photo with strong contrast and a simple background. Portraits with side light, pets and buildings work well.
  2. Raise the contrast in any photo editor if the picture is flat. This matters more than any slider here.
  3. Drop it above. Set Mode to Cricut cut-ready (one colour).
  4. Slide Threshold until the face or subject reads clearly. Small changes make a big difference.
  5. Raise Remove specks to tidy the noise, then download the SVG.

Expect a stencil look

You will get solid black shapes, not thin pencil lines. That is exactly what cutters and laser engravers can use.

Try several thresholds

Save two or three versions at different Threshold values and pick the one that looks best at the final size.

Simple beats detailed

Busy backgrounds turn into clutter. Crop to the subject first.

Questions

Can it make thin outline drawings of a photo?

It makes filled shapes from dark areas. For thin outlines, draw over the result in a vector editor.

Which photos work best?

High contrast, clear subject, plain background. Low light and blurry photos give messy results.

Is my image uploaded?

No. The tracing runs in your browser tab, so the image stays on your device.

What does it cost?

Three downloads a day are free. Unlimited is $7.99 a month, or a 20-image pack is $6.99 once.
