TracecutConverter

PNG to SVG for Cricut

Cricut Design Space cuts paths, not pixels. This converter traces a PNG or JPG into one-colour paths with the specks removed, so the machine does not make a hundred tiny cuts around dirt in the image. The file is traced on your own device.

How to do it

  1. Pick a clear image: dark shapes on a plain light background trace best. Logos, lettering and line art work. Photos do not.
  2. Drop it above and set Mode to Cricut cut-ready (one colour).
  3. Slide Threshold until the preview matches the shape you want to cut. Raise Remove specks to delete stray dots.
  4. Choose Dark areas to cut the dark parts, or Light areas if your design is light on dark.
  5. Download the SVG, then in Design Space choose Upload, Upload Image, and pick the file.

Keep shapes bigger than a pencil line

Very thin strokes and tiny gaps are hard for any blade to cut and weed. If a detail is thinner than about 1 mm at the size you will cut, thicken it in the source image or lower the Smoothing so it keeps its shape.

One colour per mat

Cut-ready mode gives you a single silhouette. For a multi-colour layered design, trace each colour from its own image, then stack the pieces in Design Space.

Check the preview, not just the file size

The path count under the preview tells you how busy the file is. A clean silhouette is usually under a few dozen paths.

Questions

Does Cricut Design Space accept SVG files?

Yes. Design Space uploads SVG, PNG, JPG and a few other formats. An SVG keeps its cut paths, which is why it is the better choice for cutting.

Why does my traced file have so many pieces?

Usually the source has noise, JPG compression blocks or a gradient. Raise Remove specks, use a higher-contrast image, or start from a PNG instead of a JPG.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. The tracing runs in your browser. The server only sees a request when you pay or download with a paid plan.

Can it turn a photo into a cut file?

It will produce a silhouette of a photo, but results are blotchy. Pick a photo with a strong outline against a plain background, or use a drawn version.

What does it cost?

Three downloads a day are free. Unlimited is $7.99 a month, or a 20-image pack is $6.99 once.
