PNG to SVG for Canva

People ask how to turn a PNG into an SVG for Canva because they want to recolour a logo or resize it without blur. The route is to trace the PNG into shapes first, then upload the SVG. Colour mode keeps a handful of flat colours that are easy to change.

How to do it

  1. Start from a flat logo or icon. Photos will not recolour sensibly.
  2. Drop it above and keep Mode on Colour. Set Colours to the number of colours in the art.
  3. Check the preview for stray shapes and raise Remove specks to clear them.
  4. Download the SVG.
  5. In Canva, open Uploads, add the SVG, and drag it onto your design. Click it to change the colours.

Recolouring works best with few colours

Each flat colour in the SVG shows up as a swatch you can change. Keep the count low.

Check Canva's file rules

Canva has its own rules for which SVG files it accepts and which accounts can use them. Check the current help page if an upload is refused.

Background shape

A JPG source leaves a background rectangle. Delete it in Canva once it is on the page.

Questions

Why do I need SVG for Canva?

An SVG scales without blur and lets you recolour shapes. A PNG can't do either.

Is the traced logo exact?

It is a close copy. For an official logo, ask the designer for the original vector file.

Is my image uploaded?

No. The tracing runs in your browser tab, so the image stays on your device.

What does it cost?

Three downloads a day are free. Unlimited is $7.99 a month, or a 20-image pack is $6.99 once.
