PNG to SVG for a vinyl cutter

A vinyl cutter follows lines. Hand it a pixel image and it has nothing to follow. This converter draws those lines for you from a PNG or JPG, then cleans out the tiny pieces that make weeding miserable.

How to do it

  1. Choose artwork with solid shapes. Bold script and block lettering weed far better than hairline fonts.
  2. Drop it above. Set Mode to Cricut cut-ready (one colour). It is the same single colour trace any cutter needs.
  3. Move Threshold until each letter or shape is fully filled in the preview.
  4. Raise Remove specks until the little dots are gone, and check the path count under the preview.
  5. Download the SVG, load it in your cutter software, size it, mirror it if you are cutting heat transfer vinyl, and cut.

Mirror heat transfer vinyl

Iron-on vinyl is cut face down. Mirror the design in your cutting software, not in the trace.

Mind the smallest gap

If a gap is under about 1 mm at final size the vinyl will lift in clumps. Open it up in the source art.

One colour, one sheet

Trace each colour of a layered design from its own image and cut each on its own vinyl.

Questions

Which cutters can use the SVG?

Cricut, Silhouette, Brother ScanNCut, Siser and most others import SVG. Open it in their desktop or app import menu.

Can I cut a name or quote from a screenshot?

Yes, if the text is large and sharp. Trace it, then check every letter in the preview before you cut.

Is my image uploaded?

No. The tracing runs in your browser tab, so the image stays on your device.

What does it cost?

Three downloads a day are free. Unlimited is $7.99 a month, or a 20-image pack is $6.99 once.
